THE ESSENTIALS REPORT |
Now is the time to shift our perception and examine water beyond its molecular structure of hydrogen and oxygen to best identify the benefits as a resource and quality beyond sustaining life. Perhaps, we can even suggest that clean water is a luxury since its access does have limitations. However, much laziness has been lingering on in the puddles to solve water contamination and pollution problems which cause environmental issues along with health concerns. Prioritizing water as a resource and quality can aide tremendously in how we preserve our water supply systems by giving it the attention and investments it deserves. Most recently, Masonville Cove, home to the nation's first Urban Wildlife Refuge Partnership coordinated efforts with co-host the Greater Baybrook Alliance and Blue Water Baltimore to ensure that the education, research and investments in clean water is accessible through promoting Community Science Programs. This was also the first urban water community event for Greater Baybrook Alliance spearheaded by Ralinda Wimbush, Environmental Justice Organizer. The Community Science Day was a success. The Baybrook Alliance mission is to act as a catalyst and conduit for equitable development and reinvestment in the Brooklyn, Brooklyn Park, and Curtis Bay neighborhoods and empower the residents to strengthen the Baybrook Community. Furthermore, Blue Water Baltimore provides an array of waterkeeper services such as advocacy, monitoring, restoration and education just to name a few. Why Invest in Water as a Resource and Quality? Why not? It is very simple. Water is a vital resource and the quality can impact not just the environment but also individual's health. Through the Blue Water Baltimore Community Science Program, participants were able to learn exactly how our water supply system functions along with other helpful tips. A pipe is over capacity only when a certain amount of water in the pipe backs up which could also mean that more storm water is in it. A solution to such problem would be creating a spongy city since we are not able to slow the speed of rain. By implementing greenwater storm projects, rain gardens, are ways to reimagine the area. When we identify the problems then we learn what is happening in a particular ecosystem. Unfortunately at the rate new developments are erected minimal investment is pouring back in to clean water and that needs to change. Water in Baltimore moves in the same way since its installation. The tree roots clean the water which recharges the ground and creates a stream. Once that stream is created it is a challenge for the pipes to handle all the rain water which then takes it to the stream. With the MS4 storm drain pipe system, no mitigation is occurring. The municipal separate storm water sewer system is only separate for rain water. The big pipe only provides quality from street to stream so be very cautious of what you put down the drains. Getting Active in the Water Quality Process? Through Community Science Programs such as water sampling that is the start to identifying the quality of the water in that particular location. What is fascinating about water sampling is that not all samples will have the same readings. Some results do return as being above the threshold determined safe for human interaction by the state of Maryland. Many factors can affect such findings like the temperature of the water along with its depth. On a universal level, water as a resource and quality quenches the thirst of many especially on a hot day! The lack of investment in water supply systems has caught up with many corporations leaving the cost to be the critical compound to limited solutions. The days of waiting until sever weather storms arrive to care about water as a resource and quality should be behind us now. Having some consideration for water consumption and what materials harm the systems could help prevent boiling advisory notices.
