Are you boarding a disinformation train with no fact checking station in this Digital Age?5/26/2021 Washington, D.C. - The Turkish Heritage Organization Center of Turkish American Relations held a virtual discussion "The Digital Age and Disinformation," featuring distinguish guest speakers Lukas Andriukaitis, Associate Director Digital Forensic Research Lab, Atlantic Counsel, and Daniel Castro, Vice President Information Technology and Innovation Foundation, with moderator Savannah Lane of the Turkish Heritage Organization. It's obvious that this virtual discussion comes at a pivotal moment in America's history, which will require a major transition in how consumers obtain information for decades to come. Moreover, this method has raised several concerns regarding disinformation and its affects on the American society from various sectors.
In a brevity Biden Administration with sudden and swift removal of fact checking which was a feature once heavily promoted by main stream media, and services provided by social media platforms like Facebook and Twitter has also attributed to the concerns. Considering it was a prior provision both social media platforms took pride in during the 2020 Election campaign season by providing polling information and election results. These platforms increased their engagements efforts to combat disinformation in the healthcare industry with providing fact-checking labels on COVID 19 information. The attitudes and behaviors towards disinformation has been examined and categorized as conspiracy theory. Now what is a conspiracy theory? It depends on what one puts into practice perhaps and in hopes that what they seek to find has some reference point for further validation. This is not the politically correct definition but merely an interpretation. What was once classified as alternative news has now surmounted to a digital age of disinformation, but are bots to blame? Not solely but partially depending upon how they are used. Being of good character to recognize when a thread could potential possess disinformation is beneficial. The date is always a great reference point along with the source of information. Google does a great service with ranking information on their browser at the top which typically alludes that the information is somewhat credible to their standard of what information holding and passageway. Furthermore, the 45th President, Donald Trump was totally removed from the Twitter platform and had to wait for permission from the Facebook oversight safe space board as to if the President's visibility would be restored or require further deliberation. Moreover, the train to tackle disinformation doesn't stop there. According to Daniel the digital age is the lay of the land and propaganda will forever concern this tech space due to partially enabling propaganda which started during the printing press era. Some of the disinformation is driven by social networks, such as Twitter and Facebook. Larger platforms like Facebook afforded the ability of ideas to spread quick and so much has an emotional response impacting key areas of our society such as elections, public health, and national security, suggest Mr. Castro during the discussion. The measure to combat this concern have been through various facets of removal of content by algorithms, crowd sourcing, or third party moderators. More transparency was a tool that can be added on to the method to not boarding the disinformation train, and how effective policy is in ways that it doesn't harm freedom of speech. "Challenge is which direction we move forward, and many people want to move in the right direction," stated Mr. Castro about the future of this concern. Mr. Andriukaitis efforts on disinformation are a little different with aspects of effort to study it and process to identify, expose, and explain information using open source to combat disinformation working on specific issues in different regions. The impact of disinformation is an important part to understand suggest Lukas because it doesn't focus on the entire society just different groups. The 2016 Election aim for swing states and get groups to believe what you want to get a specific outcome is what's beneficial to understand. Artificial intelligence is certainly going to drive and transform the future of combating disinformation as the utilization of AI increase economic growth and security, and we know how important and transformational it can be. The advances in speech recognition such as talk to Siri or Ask Google present a question of how powerful and impactful the difference is using these technologies will be. Mr. Castro gave an example of a human gamer and AI gaming system and the AI system will do so much better because a human can't keep up which will ultimately transform every sector in government and defense. "AI is like electricity," stated Daniel Castro, and having a strategy to integrate into an organization and it's adoption is one question. A few more would be to evaluate if the talent is sufficient and is there any data available and if firms or businesses are investing in those areas. "Technology can be used for bad purposes, or used for good, you have to have a plan," Mr. Castro shared during the virtual discussion. "COVID turned the world to a digital connection," suggest Lukas. Is the world at an increase risk of disinformation for reliance on technology, however his organization saw some red flags during COVID but many were more susceptible to disinformation from fake news with people moving in echo chambers ignoring any expert opinion. Disinformation is sort of like a cat and mouse game with changes in debunkers and deep fakes along with the political mistrust of the media which presents an information war. Furthermore, with long-term education and media literacy with infusion of critical thinking can help with the prevention of boarding the misinformation train in this digital age that is here to stay. There's a cliché' which suggest you can remove an individual from the ghetto, but that form of environmental nurturing will remain? Probably when it accounts to being able to survive in a new community, but most and often people want to elevate, rise about those environmental and socioeconomic conditions which have a positive or negative affect on their lifestyle impacting their mental, spiritual, and physical plain on this planet. A sufficient evaluation of the conditions in a circumstance is always a great starting point to assist what areas in your life are in need of lifting up.
One can level up once they have risen up. If you are an individual which procrastinates or often an rejecter of change, then elevation may take some more exposure to lift you up. Unfortunately, accountability is an attribute to elevation and requires a person to eliminate the need for creating excuses. Most importantly, being mindful of your speech can contribute to lifting you up! Thinking outside of the box is pretty bold but beautiful, besides why does it have to be a box. Yes, your existence is a gift, but why confine it to a box when you have plenty of space to stretch out your thoughts beyond boxed thinking? If you are boxed in, who will be able to experience what you have to contribute to your environment? Everyone will not be enthused or encouraging with regards to the method of elevation you embark upon, because it may end what appeared to be friends and supportive family. Furthermore, if they're entering a life cycle of their purpose, there's a possibility a sharing of experience can ensue for some excitement. Why complain about what you have the capacity to change? This is when elevation can aide in one's ability to rise above the challenge. Yes, elevation does require separation, but does not prevent one from achieving greatness; which is why the doctor cuts the ambilocal cord from the mother after the baby is released from the embryonic fluid sac of the womb. When you need a reminder or a way to associate elevation with your environment, just look at everything around you that rises or lifts up, which first can be your head to look at the eagles flying in the sky, the flowers blossoming, trees, bees buzzing near you, or even a plane might fly by. Be aware of your purpose for existence which is to evolve! So it's time to elevate, elevate, elevate and eliminate any outdated patters that would previously pause your point of purpose in this lifetime, think beyond a box. My bold and beautiful fancy parakeets also known as budgies, Blue and Butter Baby keep me busy. I've been a bird mom for almost one year. It's been a bountiful but busy learning experience. Blue was the first fancy parakeet that my family and I purchased. He has been exposed to the beach life and shopping at the outlet mall since we first purchased him at Petco.
This is our first time having a bird as a pet considering I'd had a cat, hamster, fish, and a dog as pets prior. Blue or Butter Baby don't say words in particular and have no problem with cutting the conversation short if they feel it's getting carried away. My fancy parakeets have a very big and bold personality and it's never a dull moment. Although I was giving Blue the attention, love, and care needed, my teen suggested that it was time for Blue to have a companion. We had agreed that around Valentine's Day to make the final decision, and a day before we were at Pet Smart in search of a companion for Blue. it was the unique feather pattern, bold and bright yellow color that compelled us to choose Butter Baby formerly known as Butterscotch. We named the fancy parakeet Butterscotch at the time because the pet store assistant told us the gender was female. Going with that information, I then purchased toys to compliment a girls style since Blue had the basketball goal post. After you have purchased your pets it is strongly recommended that you take them to the veterinarian for a health check. Considering the climate and current conditions, scheduling an appointment is a challenge. And a challenge it was for me and my teen to get Butterscotch in the travel cage for a trip to the doctor. It was quite the workout and I didn't know I still wasn't in shape until that moment. While waiting in my car for Butterscotch appointment to be over, the doctor called me to tell me that Butterscotch was in good health and that the gender was male. In that very instant I said "oh no." I was devastated only because for almost 2 months I'd misidentified the gender of my fancy parakeet and gave it the name Butterscotch. After that surprise we considered to rename our parakeet to Butter Baby because he is slick and starts the beak fights with Blue. Well, they're brother's now, no longer companions but they do have a competition with their cuteness. When they clean their feathers in the bird bath, the boldness and brightness shines through. They don't like apples or celery leaves but love to eat the leaves on my plants and flowers. Not sure why Blue allows Butter Baby to influence him. The great thing about being a bird mom is that we have established some rules and they're either in their cage or on the perch by 9 p.m. for a good night's rest. Around 7 a.m. they are ready to eat and have no problems with knocking over their bowl if the seeds are not up to their standards. My teen suggest they're spoiled but I wouldn't say that, they just stole my heart! Being a bird mom has brighten my horizon on life! One thing about being in Los Angeles, is that you never know who you will meet. So first impressions are lasting ones. While out in LA last month, walking around Lemiert Park proceeding to take pictures, and the gentleman didn't mind me capturing his picture "natural," is what he'd suggest for the photo and that wasn't planned but very pleasant for the moment. That encounter lead to to meet International Reggae and Dancehall Artist "Smiley I." He shared his awesome music video with me so I am excited to share. "Smiley I," a native of Kingston, Jamaica is a songwriter, producer, and proud owner of the Independent Record Label, Silverlink Production. At the early age of 15 "Smiley I" started to evolve his passion for Arts and love for music. The development of Smiley I's dynamic style is the result of a lifetime of musical influences, namely; General Echo, Oscar Hibbert aka "Junior Delgardo," Yellow Man, Buju Banton, and Low Ranger. |
