BACK TO THE BASICS |
Perhaps when the President of the United States request for technology companies to #Stopthebias through his 21st century means of communication use of Twitter, then potentially it will prompt the Department of Justice to consider the best resolution. With the vast global use of technology on every scale conceivable - from ordering your favorite appliances, to even establishing your own e-commerce business; having fair market standards, practices, along with enforcement is important.
Not certain if all the free advertising on social media platforms during the 2016 Presidential campaigns caused some feelings of other campaign strategies not being able to connect with the American people. Furthermore, in 2019 a spike in political campaign censorship with search results on Google's web browser had certain elected officials higher ranked even if they're not a Committee Chairman. Certainly, these types of activities can concern anyone especially if they're trying to search their own small business and it's found on page 20 of the search results - that's not a good feeling even if your Instagram following is great. These concerns along with others lead to July's Department of Justice announce "Justice Department Reviewing the Practices of Market-leading Online Platforms." The Department's Antitrust Division is reviewing whether and how market-leading online platforms have achieved market power and are engaging in practices that have reduced competition, stifled innovation or otherwise harmed consumers. The Departments Review will consider the widespread concerns that consumers, businesses, and entrepreneurs have expressed about search, social media and some retail services online. "Without the discipline of meaningful market-based competition digital platforms may act in ways that are not responsive to consumer demands," said Assistant Attorney General Makan Delrahim of the Antitrust Division. The Office of Attorney General Karl Racine Public Affairs was responsive when we reached out for the District's approach to tackling possible antitrust infractions. MJ News: What is the Attorney General's position on pursuing Google outside of the other 49 Attorney General's? Marrisa Geller: As part of AG Racine’s effort to ensure that there is a level playing field in the tech industry, the District of Columbia has joined a bipartisan coalition of 50 attorneys general investigating Google’s impact on consumer choices and on businesses that use its advertising platform. MJ News: How many staff will be assisting him? Marrisa Geller: The number of OAG staff and attorneys working on any particular matter can vary at any time in the course of an investigation. Staff from all 50 attorneys general offices are involved in this matter. MJ News: What is the Attorney General main goal in this antitrust probe? Marrisa Geller: AG Racine joined this investigation to determine how Google’s practices impact consumers and other businesses. MJ News: Does the Attorney General have any specific concerns regarding Google that the other Attorney General's haven't addressed? Marrisa Geller: Like the other Attorneys General, AG Racine is concerned about Google’s potential monopolistic behavior. MJ News: How long will the investigation take? Marrisa Geller: AG Racine plans to objectively follow the facts wherever they lead and it is too early to tell how long that may take. MJ News: Did the Attorney General have any prior concerns about Google before the announcement on 9/9/19? Marrisa Geller: In 2016, AG Racine and Utah AG Sean Reyes sent a letter to the FTC requesting it reopen an investigation into Google for allegedly favoring its own products in search results but the FTC declined. Hopefully, with all task forces on deck and through rigorous investigations a sound and fair solution could be found to free up the marketplace monopolization amongst the "Powerhouse of Three" - Amazon, Facebook, and Google. It is enough room in the marketplace for entrepreneurs to thrive, along with the Powerhouse of Three without creating barriers to competition in the marketplace. Besides, it will take an entrepreneur many years and crowd source funding opportunities to even build up enough data sufficient to assume they present competition such as the "Powerhouse of Three." President Woodrow Wilson believed that effective antitrust enforcement required specification of unlawful business practices. Later, Wilson proposed what became the Clayton Act, enumerating illegal acts precisely and by providing criminal sanctions to ensure compliance. President Wilson also urged the creation of an administrative agency, an interstate trade commission, to promote fair competition by investigating and publicizing trade abuses as well as by advising businesses about the legality of specific practices. The District of Columbia Attorney General has broad criminal and civil enforcement powers, including the ability to recover damages suffered by consumers. The DC Antitrust Act prohibits unreasonable restraints of trade. It is unlawful for any person to monopolize attempt to monopolize, or combine or conspire of any other persons. The DC Antitrust Act provides investigative powers at the local level and permits enforcement through local courts.

When I received the notice that Jessye Norman would be at the Library of Congress, and if you plan to attend the event, early arrival is recommended. I remember it like yesterday - considering I caught a cab to drop me in front of the Library of Congress for the event. My uncle Larry always thought I'd be an opera singer, however this was my moment to go and bear witness to a true legend Jessye Norman. Her story was remarkable, and most memorable was her journey she shared.
I tell you what taking that taxi cab to get to the Library of Congress for there Concert Series sure was worth every dollar paid. Unknowingly, this would be my first and last time every being able to share in the moment with Jessye Norman. She passed away at the age of 74 on September 30, 2019. Although she is no longer her phyiscally, her sound will always remain present. Here's too the Most Memorable Moment of 2019, Number 3. Click the link to recap the original story. It all started with a conversation in my Comp Tia A+ workforce development class. The introduction to The DC Voice online news publication back in 2015. The conversation was really great considering I'd been producing "Welcome to the Mindy Jo News Show." It was a moment where preparation meets opportunity and it's a perfect match to spread my wings and soar to knew heights.
I remember feeling like I finally landed an opportunity in my career path, and I would get paid as a freelance journalist. That sure made all of my college syllabus course work finally pay off -just not the student loan debt. When I graduated college in May of 2010, major transitions were occurring in the news industry. This was a time blogger's had started to replace many prestigious by lines with years of delivering news. Perhaps uncertainty can drive some innovation as long as one is optimistic of the endless possibilities. My first published article for The DC Voice was in January of 2016. From that day I would then go on to publish close to 100 plus more, along with producing original digital content. Because the publication is a digital format, the fit was fantastic for the original digital content I produced. Eventually, I was able to have my own section on the publication. That was an honor and incredible moment. However, staying on beat would be how I would later maintain that section. The task wasn't easy, moreover being out in the community learning about various organizations, and speaking with many people made everything worthwhile. In this business you're only as good as your last question, and, or story. Nonetheless, that's sort of cliche to me, but my very last story took about 15 days to write. Much had taken place before I could even publish the story. Moreover, it finally made its debut on April 30, 2019. I didn't know at that time, that would be my last story under my own section for the publication, but it was. It's been a miraculous time as a freelance journalist and videographer for the online news publication. The opportunity was once in a lifetime and the experience is unmatched - not to mention all the original body's of work. While the 2019 calendar year approaches the end, I decided it's out with the old, and back on my own, "Welcome to the Mindy Jo News Show," where I share news that you can absolutely use! So, Let's Get Right To It. ™ Here's too number 4 most memorable moment of 2019. Click this link to read my last published article. Take Me Out To the World Series Game At National's BallPark: Most Memorable Moment Number SIX12/24/2019 Whether it's one, two, or three strikes then you're out at the ball game, the Washington National's brought home their first World Series title. That's remarkable considering not another pitch is even necessary until the next season. Coming in at number six, most memorable moment is the 2019 World Series Champions, the Washington Nationals defeating the Houston Astos. The national league east division was established in 1969, and even played at the Robert F. Kennedy Stadium from 2005 until 2007. This was certainly a wild card! Even for season ticket holders here in Washington, DC, because they certainly didn't see the sum of cost for the tickets equal a World Series return on their hard earned dollars. 2019 Most Memorable Moments: Coming In At Five, Flames Flying A Fire On the Rooftop At RedRocks12/24/2019 Suppose having your smartphone in the passenger seat and not your hand helps, especially when you suddenly see a fire. It's pull over, park the vehicle, and go into reporting mode, instantly. It was a so real moment. Not to factor in being a frequent patron of the place. The feelings of disbelief had settled in. If we can't go to RedRocks for a rooftop view of the city, where can we go? Despite the large flames engulfing the rooftop, the fire was eventually put out. The business is back, open and booming. This was my first breaking news story to start the year. Sometimes a fire will fuel a friendship, how meaningful? Is to be determined. ABC was the only news station that didn't credit me, and did a quick transition into another news story. Just glad my boots were on the ground to break the story and no one was injured at RedRocks restaurant and lounge. Take a look back at the flames flying. Free at last, free at last, thank the heavens, galaxies, and stars to be free at last, but not so fast because freedom isn't as free as the word is expressed. In the month of April, the District celebrated its 157th Emancipation Day. Freedom is often a word that is abused and if not careful can be revoked from you. What is freedom? That interpretation is solely based on individual beliefs, values, religion, and expressions. According to oxford dictionary, they define freedom as a noun which is a person, place or thing. Furthermore, it goes on to define freedom as the power, or right to act, speak, or think as one wants without hindrance or restraint. The definition also applies to the state of not being imprisoned or enslaved. What does freedom mean to you was the question presented to the participants. Take a look back at this Holy Trinity moment, number 7, most memorable moment of 2019. It's been a long time coming, and this is a great foundation point to build upon securing consumer's data privacy. Many have looked to Europe for the establishment of the premise for privacy protection. Furthermore, California will be the state who's up for the critical challenge of protecting consumer privacy. The time and perfect opportunity has arrived for some corporate responsibility with giving high priority and regards to the consumer's privacy. Perhaps, something is better than nothing at all. Click this link to look back a triple M number 8.
